1975:
Chairman Kohei Oikawa of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperative Associations made a recommendation at the Annual Meeting of the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum that “we should pave the way for thorough investigation and research on the effects of thermal effluents”
December
1975:
The establishment of the Marine Ecology Research Institute was approved, and the Head Office was opened in the Kamakura Kashi Building
1976: Began commissioned research for the Fisheries Agency and the Environment Agency
1977: Began commissioned research for the Ministry of International Trade and Industry
October
1979:
Opened a branch office in the Kuramachi Building
November
1979:
Completed the Central Laboratory
February
1981:
Held the “5th Anniversary Research Meeting on the Effects of Power Plant Water Intake and Discharge”
January
1984:
Began a commissioned project for the Science and Technology Agency
November
1984:
Completed the Demonstration Laboratory
January
1985:
Held the “10th Anniversary Research Report Meeting on the Effects of Power Plant Water Intake and Discharge”

1987:
Moved the Head Office from the Kamakura Kashi Building to the Kitahara Building

Completed the Nuclear Power Plant Thermal Effluent Exhibition Hall at the Demonstration Laboratory

1991:
Held the “15th Anniversary Research Report Meeting on the Effects of Power Plant Water Intake and Discharge”

1991:
Expanded the Head Office to form Divisions 1 and 2

1994:
Recommendation from the Steering Committee on the “Future of MERI”

Moved the Head Office from the Kitahara Building to the Teikoku Shoin Building

Formulated the “Future MERI Research - Guidelines for Action”

Constructed the marine organism rearing experimental facility at the Demonstration Laboratory

Demonstration Laboratory was damaged by the Chuetsu Offshore Earthquake

Following the dissolution of the Warm Water Fish Farming Development Association, the remaining assets were accepted

Moved the Head Office from the Teikoku Shoin Building to the Towa-Edogawabashi Building

Held the “35th Anniversary Report Meeting”

Changed structure to that of a Public Interest Incorporated Foundation
