1.Our Activities
Since 1983, we have been conducting radioactivity monitoring of marine organisms, sediments and seawater offshore of the nuclear power plants and nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities along the coast of our country. Along with the monitoring program, we have conducted supplementary research works for clarifying effects of feeding habits, growth stages and other factors causing variations in radioactivity in fish.

The graph below shows changes in concentrations of strontium-90 and cesium-137 in seawater of 14 sea areas off the nuclear power plants throughout Japan.
Gradual decrease in the concentrations can be noticed except for the cesium-137 values of 1986, which could be attributed to the accident at Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Radioactivity levels of marine organisms and sediments have been nearly unchanged since 1983 through 2001.
